WS90E tram switch controller

The WS90E tram switch controller is intended for the comprehensive operation of tram switches. Operation takes place remotely from the vehicle via any kind of command transmission system (catenary contactors, infrared connection, radio connection or others).
In order to ensure the complete security of a tram passing through a switch, each controller is equipped with internal and external control and security systems. The device is produced in co-operation with AG Siemens in Vienna.

The WS90E controller has been granted official acceptance permitting its use in public city transport and the European Medal III Edition, confirming its compliance with European standards.

Basic properties of the WS90E controller
  • versatility - the WS90E is compatible with any new generation locked switch drive and supports complicated and multiple switch sets
  • safety - the WS90E has a tested and accepted system for ensuring safe operation and tram passage through the switch in accordance with EU requirements
  • flexibility - the device ensures the comprehensive operation of all tram switch functions (control, heating, event log, remote supervision and heating control) and co-operates with any command transmission medium
  • openness - thanks to its well-developed architecture, the WS90E can co-operate with any switch drives or traffic lights, and it enables the monitoring and remote testing of switch operation from the Dispatch Centre and can also be easily fitted with new functions
  • acceptance - the WS90E controller underwent examinations and was granted with certificates issued by the Institute of Spatial Management and Housing in Warsaw, enabling its use in tram traffic in Poland
The key controller units are delivered in the form of modules:
  • security relay module checking the correctness of signals sent and received by the controller
  • track locking module (Siemens TRACON) controlling the occupation status of a track section in the switch area in order to provide secure tram passage (after detecting tram presence in the switch area, its position is locked for the prevention of derailing). Two independent physical factors are used for the determination of tram presence in the lock area, which in practice eliminates the possibility of mistakes
  • microcomputer module for analysis of the condition of the entire system and its control. This module is equipped with an event log and communication interface
  • remote control module (infrared, radio, catenary contactors) enabling communication with the vehicle
  • thermal adjustment module handling switch temperature measurement and heating control, which may also co-operate with weather automatics (rain and temperature sensors, etc.)
  • display module for user communication. In this way, the vehicle operator approaching a switch receives information on its status - position, occupation of switch lock area or controller disorder. This module also co-operates with a special LED signalling device of greater durability and legibility in all conditions
  • communication module in charge of connection with the dispatch centre/maintenance after any communication medium (GPRS, cable connection)
  • controller power module from catenary network with complete galvanic insulation of electronic circuits from the power network
Operational security is ensured by the application of solutions fulfilling the requirements of the fail-safe standard and multiple verification of relevant control signals.
